Are direct quotes counted in my word limit?

Two questions: i) Is the word limit 1,500 or 1,600? The guide states it's 1,500 but my teacher and other people on different forums say it's 1,600. ii) Are citations from the book (and maybe other sources) being included to the word count, when in the main body?

I would recommend creating a second copy of your document and removing the items that would NOT be included and see what your word processor comes up with for the word count. That would probably put you pretty close to where you need to be. As far as editors,it just depends. Some may be flexible.

Footnotes are NOT normally included in the word count of a piece of work at Portsmouth. However, they should be used primarily to give details of sources you have referenced.
